From First ‘I Do’ to Full-Time Purpose: How I Found My Voice as a Wedding Officiant

It all started with one question: “Have you ever thought about doing weddings?”

At the time, I was focused on my notary business — navigating the ins and outs of loan signings and mobile appointments. But when someone asked if I could legally marry them, I said yes — and from there, Wed By Norm was born. I had no idea that single “yes” would open the doors to hundreds of heartfelt ceremonies, custom scripts, and relationships I’ll carry for a lifetime.

In one of my previous interviews, I shared something that still sticks with me: “Officiating is about being present. People are nervous. Emotions are high. You become the calm in the storm.” That’s always been my secret sauce — making sure every couple feels at ease, seen, and celebrated, especially when things don’t go perfectly (because let’s be honest, weddings rarely go 100% perfectly).

I never thought I’d be the person coaching others on how to speak in front of 200 people or guiding couples on how to craft their vows. But as I kept showing up — one ceremony after another — I saw how much power the officiant holds in setting the tone for the day. Whether it’s lighthearted, spiritual, modern, or traditional, the officiant is the first person who helps bring the couple (and their guests) into the moment.

This journey didn’t start with me trying to be the best in the industry. I started as someone who just wanted to be helpful — and that was enough. I created my own scripts, learned through trial and error, and networked at every chance. I wasn’t afraid to ask other professionals for advice. I wasn’t afraid to say, “Hey, I’ve never done that — but I’m willing to learn.” And I said yes to opportunities that scared me.

In my Notary Today interview, I touched on how many of us come into this space without a roadmap. I wasn’t born into the wedding world. I did have a mentor, and I knew how to connect with people. I knew how to communicate. And I knew that representation matters. Many of my couples are Black, multicultural, LGBTQ+, or interfaith. They want someone who reflects their values and gets their vision. And I always tell newer officiants: “Don’t just perform a ceremony — honor it. That’s how you build trust, referrals, and legacy.”

Today, I’m proud to serve weddings across NJ, NY, PA, CT, RI, and beyond — including destination weddings and elopements. Wed By Norm has become a trusted brand for couples looking for authenticity, professionalism, and someone who can guide them with a mix of warmth and wisdom.

I also co-own the Wedding Officiant Academy, where we help officiants of all levels scale their business, find their voice, and turn a side hustle into a calling. Through coaching, digital products, and live sessions, we’re showing people how to create consistent revenue and flexibility — and more importantly, how to serve with heart.

Here’s what I always say:
“There’s no one way to be an officiant — but the best ones make the couple feel like they’re the only two people in the room.”

Whether you’re thinking about officiating your first ceremony or already have 50 under your belt — don’t stop. Keep learning. Keep showing up. Keep growing. The world needs officiants who are professional and who care. The world needs you.
